Full Seminar Title: Spanglish
Spanglish is often
viewed as a corruption of Spanish and English spoken by
incompetent bilinguals. This seminar investigates the
linguistic, historical, and cultural origins of
Spanglish and the types of identities that are
communicated in/by Spanglish; compares the Spanglish
of Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and other Latinos; and
examines the role of schools, the media, poets, and
musical performers in the dissemination of Spanglish
and the linguistic, psycho-social, and academic
repercussions for Spanglish speakers. Seminar will meet January 13, 20, 27; Feb. 3, 10.
