199 Independent Study/Undergrad
If you are interested in a Math 199, your first step would be to think about which faculty member/research area you would like to work with and then ask them if they are willing to act as your advisor. Students should generally have completed two quarters of upper division coursework in the mathematical area in which they plan to work. A good resource for matching faculty and research areas is the Math Department website: http://www.math.ucsd.edu/research/all-research-areas/
