The social and musical mind:Topics in social cognition,
music cognition,In this course we'll be discussing
topics in social cognition and music cognition,
bringing together literatures on two fundamental human
capacities to shed light on both.Each week, we'll read
we'll read several papers on a relevant topic (guided
by student interests), and have a student presentation
on the papers followed by a discussion of the papers
and how they fit into the broader literature.We'll draw
readings from work in cognitive development and the
evolution of cognition, ranging from low-level auditory
perception to high-level causal reasoning.
Topics may include: imitation, social learning, and
culture: links between sound, movement,and action:
reasoning about intentional actions and events:
our concepts of human-made artifacts (like tools, art,
& music): and the origins of dance/ synchronized
movement.
