Analytical Writing Placement Exam
The Analytical Writing Placement Exam provides entering
students an opportunity to test out of the Entry Level
Writing Requirement.
If you have not fulfilled the Entry Level Writing
Requirement (ELWR), you are required to take the
Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE). You must
fulfill the ELWR within your first three quarters of
enrollment.
No student may take this test more than once.
Prerequisite checking is in place.
NOTE: If you need to take the AWPE, please contact
Grace Aspiras at 858-534-6177, email her at
gaspiras@ucsd.edu, or visit her in the Literature
Building, Room 227.
To be admitted to this exam, a student must display a
photo I.D., preferably one bearing the student's
signature.
If you do not pass the AWPE, you are instructed to
enroll immediately in ELWR 1. You must enroll in your
ELWR 1 course during your first quarter of residence
at UCSD. Be sure to enroll before classes have met
for the second time. If you miss this enrollment,
you will have wasted one of three quarters in which
to fulfill the Entry Level Writing Requirement.
If you receive an e designation with your AWPE
score, you are instructed to enroll immediately in
ELWR 2A. ELWR 2A is the first of a two-term course
designed to offer students whose first language is
not English the opportunity to develop their critical
thinking and writing abilities. Students who enroll
in ELWR 2A are required to enroll in ELWR 2B in the
subsequent term. You will take this course once. After
completing this course, if you do not produce a passing
portfolio, you are instructed to enroll immediately in
ELWR 1. You have up to three consecutive quarters to
complete your Entry Level Writing Requirement.

Students may add and drop ELWR 1, ELWR 2A and ELWR 2B
sections on the online Schedule of Classes as
enrollment limits allow. New students may add a
section only if they took the UC Analytical Writing
Placement Exam and did not pass: prerequisite checking
is in place.
The Division of Arts and Humanities policy requires
instructors to drop students who miss more than 10% of
class meeting time. In keeping with this policy,
students who miss the first two class meetings will not
be allowed to add ELWR 1, ELWR 2A or ELWR 2B. Students
who enroll in any of the ELWR classes but then fail to
attend the first two meetings will be dropped.
If you have not cleared an ELWR waitlist by the first
day of classes, it is unlikely you will clear at all.
Immediately find an open section of the appropriate
class, enroll, and attend the first class meeting. If
you are having trouble finding an open section that
fits your schedule, visit the Basic Writing office
(Literature Building 227) for help.
