Conceptual Change and Science: Trials and Tribulations
of Communicating Science to the General Public. Consider the abundance of pseudoscience and
misinformation pertaining to issues such as global
climate change, evolution, the use of vaccines,
genetically modified foods, etc However, research
shows that simply telling someone they wrong is very
unlikely to change their mind even when they are
presented with evidence. This course is designed to
examine major issues, theories, and research in the
area of conceptual change learning. Conceptual change
research seeks to examine the theoretical,
psychological, conceptual, and pedagogical means by
which students come to think differently about
conceptual knowledge.
